Why study the Bachelors of Music/Education (Secondary)?

This dual degree program is designed specifically for students wishing to pursue a career in music education. In the first two years of the program, all students take practical study in their chosen instrument or the human voice, as well as courses in music history, techniques and aural training, plus electives from popular music or other courses. Students then undertake three years of courses relevant to their specialisation in music education. Final Year students have the opportunity to undertake teaching area courses that investigate the 7-12 Music syllabus, instrumental teaching and choral music education. Graduates are thoroughly prepared for the variety of teaching contexts expected of music teachers throughout primary and secondary school.

Honours:

Students who intend to undertake the Bachelor of Music as an Honours program must apply to transfer into the Bachelor of Music (Honours) program after completion of 2 years full time study in the Bachelor of Music pass program. Further information is available here.

Placement courses

Compulsory Placement Course

Students must complete 10 days school experience and 90 days supervised practicum. Every effort is made to place students within a reasonable distance of their home base but they can be expected to travel up to 90 minutes due to public transport connections and incur costs associated with travel and possible lost income over this period. Students are generally placed at Ipswich, Brisbane, and southeast Queensland and are encouraged to explore the option of a rural placement. Financial assistance may be available to assist with travel and accommodation costs for rural placements.

Students are required to have a current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) before commencing practicum. Students can apply for a Blue Card through the School of Education and should do so three months before their practicum is due to commence. The Teacher Preparation Programs Handbook provides information about practicum and school experience requirements and is available from School of Education.
