Why study the Bachelors of Arts / Education (Secondary)?

This pre-service teacher education program is available only as a dual degree. The BA provides content knowledge for two teaching areas while the BEd(Sec) provides skills and knowledge for the teaching of this content.

Teaching is a challenging and rewarding career, with secondary teachers in demand globally. The dual degree prepares students for secondary school teaching, or industry training.

The BEd(Sec) offers school based learning and draws on the latest research into effective teaching, ensuring graduates are well equipped to teach.

The BA provides the content knowledge for two Year 7-12 Teaching Areas or a Year 7-12 Teaching Area and a Senior Specialist Teaching area. Year 7-12 Teaching Area majors are: Ancient History/History; Chinese or Chinese Translation and Interpreting; Drama; English; French or French Advanced; Geography; German; Japanese or Japanese Advanced; Mathematics; Music or Popular Music and Technology; and Spanish. Majors for Senior Specialist Teaching Areas are: Economics; Film and TV Studies; Legal Education Studies; Media and Digital Cultures; and Psychology. The Music Specialisation provides for both Year 7-12 Music Teaching Area and Choral and Instrumental Music as a Senior Specialist Teaching Area.

Placement courses

Compulsory Placement Course

Students must complete 80 days of supervised and assessed professional experience. Every effort is made to place students within a reasonable distance of their home base but they can be expected to travel up to 90 minutes due to public transport connections and incur costs associated with travel and possible lost income over this period. Students are generally placed at Ipswich, Brisbane, and southeast Queensland and are encouraged to explore the option of a rural placement. Financial assistance may be available to assist with travel and accommodation costs for rural placements.

Students are required to have a current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) before commencing practicum. Students can apply for a Blue Card through the School of Education and should do so three months before their practicum is due to commence. The Teacher Preparation Programs Handbook provides information about practicum and school experience requirements and is available from School of Education.

Students in the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education are restricted to the following majors in order to satisfy prerequisites for teaching curriculum areas: Ancient History/History; Chinese; Chinese Translation and Interpreting; Criminology; Drama; Economics; English; Film and TV Studies; French; Geography; German; Japanese; Mathematics; Media and Digital Cultures; Music; Psychology; Spanish.

As part of the Australian Institute for Teaching and Leadership (AITSL) revised Standards and Procedures (2015), applicants to initial teacher education courses (pre-service teachers) must satisfy both academic and non-academic entry criteria for selection to the course. All applicants will need to complete an online questionnaire to meet the non-academic entry requirement for this program. Once you have submitted your application, you will be directed to the online questionnaire.

From 2018, all students are required to successfully meet the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) standards prior to graduation. The University has committed to pay for students to undertake the test for the period 2016 to 2018 inclusive.   • From 2018, all students are required to successfully meet the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) standards prior to graduation.
  • UQ committed to fund test costs to the end of 2018. From 1 January 2019 this is no longer available and students must cover this cost. The 2018 fee was $185 ($92.50 per test). ACER lists current fees.

Careers

The program equips students to teach in secondary schools or vocational education and training, and can also lead to employment in staff training and development programs in business and industry. Graduates are eligible for teacher registration in Queensland and qualified for employment as secondary school teachers in state and independent schools worldwide. Graduates who specialise in music or LOTE teaching may also seek employment in primary schools. An education degree opens up a vast range of career opportunities within educational settings such as Head of Department, Principal, Guidance Officer, Learning Support Teacher, Student Advisor and Education Advisor.

To complete the Bachelors of Arts / Education (Secondary)

To graduate with a Bachelors of Arts / Education (Secondary) a student must have successfully completed all requirements of the program as certified by the Executive Dean. This includes courses to be taken to complete the program and any other specific conditions of the program including admission, enrolment and progression requirements.
