Entry requirements

Prerequisites

  • Bachelor of Arts from the University (or equivalent) in a relevant major, or an extended major or the relevant Honours entry courses; and
  • have gained a grade point average (GPA) of 5.0 on a 7-point scale (or higher set by the Head of School for specific fields of study); or
  • satisfy the executive dean that the person is qualified to undertake the program based on the person's academic records and subject to completion of additional work, if set.

Other Entry Requirements
  • The head of school may limit places depending on supervisor availability.
  • Once eligibility is established, entry is via a competitive selection process based on GPA.

Why study the Bachelor of Arts (Honours)?

The BA (Honours) degree develops core skills and knowledge in theory and research in the humanities and social sciences. The program is based on a combination of coursework and a research project in the chosen field of study. Its objective is to produce graduates who will be able to think clearly, flexibly and critically, and be able to weigh up evidence and arguments and make rational choices. Graduates should be able to express themselves effectively, both orally and in writing; be able to work cooperatively in a team; and be able to demonstrate a depth of understanding in one or more fields of knowledge. The Honours Program also prepares students for further study at the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level. Please note that some specialisations have an intake in semester 1 only. Please check the details for specialisations (under "What you can study") or contact the relevant school.

Careers

Many employers, especially in large organisations, value the skills an Arts (Honours) degree provides and will specify an honours degree as desirable in their selection criteria. Apart from content knowledge, employers and professionals value both the reliability and capacity for independent work, and the skill at writing substantial reports which are demonstrated by successful completion of Honours. In the face of unprecedented change and uncertainty at both a local and global level, organisations are seeking graduates who can think critically and react positively to these changes. Students with a BA (Honours) are in the ideal position to meet this challenge with their ability to think independently, reason logically, and communicate clearly.

To complete the Bachelor of Arts (Honours)

To graduate with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) a student must have successfully completed all requirements of the program as certified by the Executive Dean. This includes courses to be taken to complete the program and any other specific conditions of the program including admission, enrolment and progression requirements.
