Why study Science Communication?

Science communicators introduce complex scientific information to wide variety of audiences. Simple, clear, concise communication is vital to ensuring the general public can learn about understand the rapid and exciting developments in science and mathematics. Effective science communication increasingly influences decision making about science policy, including energy conservation, waste disposal, pesticide risk, and social welfare policy. Learn alongside award-winning communication and journalism researchers and teaching specialists, who will challenge your thinking in interactive lectures, tutorials, and workshops. Practice your collaboration and interpersonal communication skills as you learn and work with other science and non-science students. Explore your career potential as a science communicator. Employment in the field is continuing to grow as organisations prioritise communicating their research to raise awareness, public support and funding. Hone your skills to potentially work in research institutions, universities, government, the private sector, the media, education, cultural institutions, medical charities and the arts.

What you can study

In this minor you will first build an introductory communication toolkit in critical thinking, reading and writing. You will also develop, deliver, and evaluate your own science communication strategy or learning activity with a local community audience. Electives in the minor allow you to choose to focus on strategic communication or journalism.
