Why study Gender Studies?

The Gender Studies Major offers sustained, in-depth study of questions of gender in Australian and other cultures and societies. Courses based in several disciplines in both the Humanities and the Social Sciences, including English Literature, Philosophy, Political Science, History, and Anthropology, complement courses specifically on gender, in which students are introduced to the cross-disciplinary modes of inquiry which are the characteristic methodology of the area. Gender Studies enables the study of gender as a distinct topic, and transforms how various disciplines examine questions of gender. Gender Studies offers innovative and evolving perspectives, and original approaches to social and political problems. The study of women, femininity, masculinity, sexuality, of feminist and related questions, and the theoretical approaches which enable these inquiries, is the main topic of Gender Studies, which connects in fascinating ways to many other social and cultural questions. The Gender Studies Major was known as the Women's Studies Major prior to 2010.
