Why study Chronic and Palliative Care?

This field of study increases students' understanding of the physical, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual needs of those faced with chronic and terminal conditions. It encourages a greater understanding of, and cooperation between, diverse groups providing for the needs of those with health or capacity challenges. Students gain relevant knowledge and skills, and enhance their ability to evaluate their own practice making effective changes as required. Graduates can recognise the similar and diverse needs of many subgroups, including children; adolescents; adults; older persons; and those with congenital conditions, chronic conditions, or more acute terminal crises. The program encourages reflection on the integration of the ideology of holistic care (as most formally espoused in palliative care principles) through all aspects of the health care system; and the concept of the illness trajectory, and the continuity of care from curative care to palliative care.
