Why study Chemical Sciences?

Chemistry is a discipline that interfaces with many other disciplines; particularly biology, materials science, and nanotechnology. This creates some of the most dynamic and rapidly expanding areas of research both within UQ and world wide.

You can choose to specialise in one of two streams, either in Chemical Biology or Materials & Nanoscience.

The Chemical Biology stream will provide you with the knowledge and skills to explore molecular processes that control the structure and function of complex biological systems and to synthesise new molecules, these skills are essential in modern pharmaceutical and medical research.

The Materials & Nanoscience stream will expose you to the synthetic strategies and the processes of self-assembly for the controlled arrangement of atoms and molecules. You will develop a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between molecular structure and the macroscopic properties of systems enabling the development of advanced materials and devices that are used in medicine, energy production, electronics, biotechnology and consumer products.

Employment opportunities

The demand for scientists with comprehensive, multidisciplinary skills and expertise is very high both in Australia and overseas. Graduates of these dual majors will be highly sought after in the pharmaceutical and medical research fields, biotechnology sector, materials manufacturing and development companies. These dual majors also provide the perfect platform from which to embark upon a research career at the interface of chemistry and biology or chemistry and material sciences.

This major is accredited by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute for the educational relevance of its chemistry content.
