Course description

From 2011, this course is offered as POLS3511.

There is a great deal of writing about war, violence, ethnic conflict and trauma but often little about how such issues are addressed in post-conflict situations. POLS2511 intends to fill this vacuum by discussing the vital themes and current practices in post-conflict peacebuilding. This will allow students to learn about peacebuilding theory and its development in world politics as well as develop practical skills through a series of exercises such as role playing and debating conflict issues. It will also help students learn the basic steps in submitting funding proposals. This is done in the context of students representing 'mock' NGOs seeking to fund various peace-building projects from international sources. This is intended to give students some practical experience and see how vital this process is to the reconstruction of war-torn societies.
