Course description
NOT 2010 This unit looks at some of the philosophical issues arising out of the study of mathematics. These include the nature of mathematical knowledge (do we discover or invent mathematical truths?), the status of mathematical entities (are they real or fictional?) and the implications such philosophical issues have for the methodology of mathematics (is classical logic the appropriate logic for mathematics?). The unit should be of interest to, and is aimed at, both mathematics students and philosophy students.
