Course description

Description: This course explores the social context in which food is produced and consumed, and thus challenges individualistic accounts of people's eating habits that assume that personal likes and dislikes primarily govern food choice. This understanding is then applied to contemporary food and nutrition issues and problems in Australia and globally. The roles of industrialisation of the food supply, class, gender, culture and health beliefs in influencing food choice and dietary patterns are explored.
