Course description

This course involves thinking about, analysing, and interpreting music's various functions in real world human conflict, and figuring out to what extent music can be said to "do things" in different contexts. Students will learn how to evaluate the manipulative capacities of music: its role in both perpetrating conflict, in providing a forum for protest, and in facilitating post-conflict resolution. This knowledge has transferable applications, with the student developing an ability to evaluate previously unstudied music and the socio-political context in which it was created, as well as the socio-political impact it generates. Knowledge from this course will be synthesised with knowledge from other courses, forming a broad knowledge-base for the student in terms of music in society, history, and its capacity to contribute to peace and conflict transformation. Please note that this course offering may be cancelled if fewer than 10 students enrol.
