Course description

This course covers the fundamental activity of rock fragmentation by blasting using commercial explosives and the impact that this process has on the overall mining value chain applicable to both surface and underground operations. Blasting engineering encompasses explosive-rock interaction and mechanisms of fracture, fragmentation and rock mass movement; it also includes design principles for the selection of explosives, charging techniques, initiation, delay systems, safety, environmental impacts, regulatory management, performance assessment and analysis; and mine process optimisation considering the important leverage that fragmentation has on downstream mineral extraction activities.
