Course description

This course develops a broad conceptual base for the study of people's leisure lifestyles at different stages of their life and in a range of settings and environments. The relationship between work and leisure will be examined, especially the mediating effect of leisure experiences on ill-health and absenteeism. Students will be introduced to an extensive range of social-psychological and leisure related literature focusing on people's leisure lives at different stages of the lifecycle. In addition, theories and models related to the beneficial effects of leisure on lifestyle will be emphasised, especially those that positively correlate with improvements in physical and psychological well-being. The role of leisure education will also be discussed and practised, as a process that is used to educate people about the importance of the contribution of leisure experiences to a healthy lifestyle and helps to reduce stress, anxiety and depression.
