Course description

This course will help students to understand the contemporary world by gaining a deeper understanding of the forces that have shaped the world since the Second World War. It will also develop the skills of researching and analysing contemporary history which will enable students to form a greater critical understanding of current world issues. The course will cover topics such as: The postwar order ¿ Cold War and the role of the USA ¿ decolonisation (Asia and Africa) ¿ apartheid ¿ Civil Rights and the politics of race ¿ energy issues and economic crisis (1970s) ¿ fall of Communism and prospects of united Europe ¿ rise of Asian economies and China as a superpower ¿ the crisis of neo-liberalism ¿ environmental crisis and protest ¿ the new disorder.
