Course description

NOT 2013 This course will look at contemporary representations of the Middle East in fiction (The Kite Runner) and in its film adaptation, in graphic memoir (Persepolis), in literary memoir (Reading Lolita in Tehran) and in documentary. Using the work of postcolonial critics such as Edward Said and Robert Young, we are interested in how debates about the colonial present draw attention to ways that narratives and images from and about Afghanistan, Iran, and the Middle East more generally circulate and contest in the West. NOTE: Course offering may be cancelled unless a minimum of 20 students enrol.
