Course description
This course will introduce students to contemporary theories of learning in music education particularly as it is relevant to childhood and adolescence. The course introduces students to psychological, neuro-biological & sociocultural views of music cognition, learning and engagement, and how student learning effectively in music education settings in schools. Students will explore the implications of developmental issues for children and teachers, and teaching and learning, and consider how to apply developmental information in their practice, through developing skills in creatively facilitating music making that is meaningful, developmentally appropriate, authentic and engaging for contemporary school students.
It is assumed that students enrolling in this course have a background in music. Musicianship skills (including singing, playing instruments, basic notation skills, aural analysis) are necessary for participation in and successful completion of the course. Students concerned about their level of knowledge and skills should contact the lecturer at their earliest opportunity.
Ensemble participation is essential to developing a full understanding of the intricacies involved in teaching secondary and primary school music. Enrolment in this course includes participation in the UQ School of Music Chorale or UQ Touch Ensemble. This opportunity will provide students with exposure to repertoire that may be used in schools, as well as an opportunity to develop broader musicianship skills. See https://music.uq.edu.au/auditions
