Entry requirements

Prerequisites

Hold an approved degree in dentistry from the university (or equivalent) with a minimum two years of graduate clinical experience and be registered as a dentist with the Dental Board of Australia.

Please note that due to limited places, entry is competitive and not all applicants who meet the entry requirements are offered a place.

The minimum GPA to be considered for admission into this program is 4.0. The GPA cut-off for those offered a place in 2018 was 4.71.

Applications for entry in 2020 are being assessed for the disciplines of Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Oral Medicine and Special Needs Dentistry. Further information about other disciplines will be available later in 2019.

Why study the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry?

UQ's Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent) is a three year fulltime Level 9 extended Masters (Australian Qualifications Framework) leading to a registrable specialist qualification. You will experience:

  • Interdisciplinary learning and undertake patient care at the state-of-the-art Oral Health Centre with the most modern equipment, technologies and teaching methods.
  • Collegial support and interaction with the profession from the first week of your first year of study.
  • Research focus over all three years of the program.
The School offers the DClinDent program in Dento-Maxillofacial Radiology, Endodontics, Oral Medicine, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Special Needs Dentistry.

Applications for entry in 2020 are being assessed for the disciplines of Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Oral Medicine and Special Needs Dentistry. Further information about other disciplines will be available later in 2019.

What you can study

You will undertake a field of study related to your chosen specialty under the guidance of a supervisor which includes a component in basic and clinical sciences, a major clinical component in the nominated specialty, and a research project and report.

Doctor of Clinical Dentistry

Placement courses

You will undertake extensive supervised clinical practice in a range of dental clinics in hospitals, external healthcare facilities and the Oral Health Centre (OHC) located at Herston.

Placements will commence in first semester of the program. Actual timing of the placement may vary depending on area of speciality.

Clinical placements may be outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area where you will be required to fund your travel, accommodation and daily living expenses.

Limited places are available in each discipline and entry is determined using a competitive selection process based on academic records, other postgraduate qualifications, work and research experience since graduation, commitment to the discipline and referee reports.

Clinical Assessment Program
Shortlisted applicants will be required to undertake a Clinical Assessment Program at the School of Dentistry. Such applicants will be responsible for all travel and accommodation costs incurred in undertaking the assessment in Brisbane.

  • Dental Board registration (approx total $2,640)
  • Senior First Aid Certificate (including CPR) (approximately $155 renewed every 3 years)
