Prerequisites
An approved midwifery degree or equivalent and be eligible for an unrestricted licence to practise as a registered midwife in Australia.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to have recent practice as a registered midwife as some assessment items in the courses are designed to expand clinical practice skills.
International students who wish to undertake this program will not qualify for a Student Visa. To study this program in Australia, international students must hold alternative Australian Visa/Residency status with a sufficient study entitlement. See Department of Home Affairs for further details. Alternatively, for programs available in 'External' mode, students may study from their home country.

Why study the Graduate Certificate in Midwifery?
Midwifery is an exciting, challenging and rewarding career in which you can celebrate the very essence of human life. Midwives offer care to women during pregnancy, labour and birth, and after their baby is born. Our balance of clinical practice and academic theory means Midwifery at UQ is held in high regard. We've developed the degree in consultation with the health and midwifery industry, so students will learn the most relevant, up-to-date theory and hands-on practical experience to help them be job-ready when they graduate.
This program is an ideal entry point for midwives who have hospital qualifications and extensive experience, but may not have prior university study. The program will enable students to further develop their general midwifery knowledge and skills and study an area of specialisation. Upon graduation, students can apply to the Master of Midwifery.
What you can study
This program introduces students to evidence based Nursing and Midwifery that will assist them in being effective consumers of research and make application of evidence to their clinical practice. In addition students will undertake 4 units of study relevant to their chosen field in either Advanced Practice Midwifery or Complex Midwifery Care.
Advanced Practice Midwifery
Assist midwives to advance their health assessment skills across the continuum of midwifery care and to develop a comprehensive knowledge of the use of pharmacology, pharmacy and therapeutic interventions required for the care of women and babies across the midwifery continuum.
Complex Care Midwifery
Prepares registered midwives to provide care across the continuum of midwifery care to women and babies with complex needs which may arise from existing health disorders or pregnancy induced factors such as obesity, diabetes and essential hypertension amongst others.

Midwives work in a variety of public or private health care settings, maternity and neonatal care settings, community health, academic/teaching, research, rural and remote health, aid organisations, and/or a combination of these areas.

To fulfil the requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Midwifery, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.
