Why study the Master of Nursing Studies?
This program has been specifically designed to prepare students within two years to work as a Registered Nurse in Australia. Students will learn to work effectively in interprofessional teams to promote quality health outcomes for clients in their care and provide high quality client centred care through safe and effective nursing practice according to the NMBA (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia) Registered Nurse Standard for Practice. All problem based learning tutorials, lectures, seminars, workshops and clinical laboratories take place at the Translational Research Institute on the Princess Alexandra Hospital campus.
What you can study
Students complete 32 units of study, 16 of these units are clinical practice courses. Second year courses may be completed over the summer semester and first semester of the following year.
The third semester can be undertaken part-time (the only part-time option in the program). Students will need to complete either one or both of the theoretical courses in one semester and the four unit (#4) clinical practice course in the following semester, followed by the final extended clinical practice eight unit (#8) course in the last semester.

Placement courses
Students will undertake approximately 800 hours of supervised clinical practice in a range of clinical settings that includes hospitals and a variety of health care organisations. During their placements, students will have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework to practice and develop their clinical skills in real life setting.
Students will commence their clinical placements in week four of the program. During the first year students will normally complete approximately 38 x 8-hour shifts and in the final year students will complete approximately 86 x 8-hour shifts.
Students may be required to undertake clinical placements outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area and students are required to fund their travel, accommodation and daily living expenses.

This program has limited intake capacity.
A semester 2 commencement will be offered for 2020 in limited circumstances. Please contact International Admissions via the 'Enquire' tab if you are interested in applying. Students commencing the program in semester 2 will be required to undertake a compulsory summer semester.
At the commencement of the program you are required to complete a medical questionnaire, supply a criminal history check and must obtain, and thereafter hold for the duration of the program, a current First Aid Certificate (including CPR) and Blue Card. You will also be required to provide evidence that you do not carry blood-borne transmissible viruses or tuberculosis (TB) and comply with a schedule of immunisations. - A clinical uniform shirt is required and may be purchased through the School.

Careers
Upon completion of the Masters of Nursing Studies program students are eligible for entry on the Australian Health Practitioner Register as a Registered Nurse.
