Why study the Master of Health Economics (Advanced)?

This program provides graduate training in all aspects of health economics, meeting the clear need for comprehensive programs in Australia and internationally. A joint initiative of UQ's School of Economics and School of Population Health, this program is designed for people intending to work in the health sector. This program is accessible to those with undergraduate qualifications in economics or other disciplines. The program offers students the opportunity to develop strong analytical skills and is a qualification which may further career opportunities in national and international health agencies.

This highly specialised program provides critical insight into the complex economic issues in health sector administration, and the economic impacts of decisions. Students may take elective courses in analytical techniques, including advanced applied econometrics, public economics, health finance, epidemiology, business and economic decision techniques, burden of disease methods, benefit-cost analysis and health and economic development.

What you can study

Students in the Advanced program are currently required to demonstrate their understanding and skills through research consisting of an economic project and thesis.

What you can do with a Master of Health Economics (Advanced)

Careers

Graduates can expect to find employment as health economics managers in pharmaceutical companies, health departments, private health facilities or government and development agencies.

Program rules for the Master of Health Economics (Advanced)

To complete the Master of Health Economics (Advanced)

To fulfil the requirements of the Master of Health Economics (Advanced), a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.

A student is required to obtain #32 from the MHEcon(Adv) List comprising -

  • #22 from Part A; and
  • #10 from Part B.
If exemptions apply for Part A courses, students are to undertake electives from Part B. With Head of School approval, a student may include #2 for any level 3 ECON or level 7 course towards Part B. Refer to the MHEcon(Adv) rules for further information..

Early exit points

Based upon course selection, students may be able to exit this award with the:

  • Graduate Certificate in Economics (#8)
  • Graduate Diploma in Health Economics (#16)
