Entry requirements

Prerequisites

A student must -
(i) for the #16 program, hold an approved degree equivalent to a 4-year degree in a relevant area; or
(ii) for the #24 program hold an approved degree.

Additional application information

All courses are offered in external mode (by distance), and most are also offered in internal mode (workshops and regular tutorials) and intensive-remote mode (5-day workshop for a small group at a mutually convenient time and location). An external student receives material in hard copy and engages with fellow students through on-line activities and web/teleconferences. Intensive mode requires some pre-reading, residence at the agreed location, and completion of assignments after the 5-day workshop. Students are able to contextualize learning activities and assignments to their own enterprise and/or region to maximize the relevance of their learning and the real application of skills and knowledge. A national network of Rangeland Champions provides advice on university expectations, learning support and encouragement for distance learners in rural and remote areas. It is an expectation that all students will have private access to a computer and the internet.
This program won the 2009 Australian Rural Education Award, in recognition of its excellence, efficient and effective educational approaches, and the benefits to rural Australia.

Why study the Master of Rangeland Management?

The rangeland management program provides essential knowledge and skills for managing current and emerging issues in Australia's vast rangelands. These are invariably complex issues, requiring a systems approach and careful consideration of 'triple bottom line' (ie. economic, environmental and social) outcomes in both management and strategic decisions. Through a problem-based approach, students will gain and apply this knowledge to ensure profitable and sustainable enterprises, healthy landscapes and vibrant communities in the rangelands.
This is Australia's only coursework program specifically in rangeland management, but the courses are relevant to an even wider area. The program is also unique in many other ways. Its structure is based on national surveys of (i) the knowledge and skills needed for individual, enterprise and community success, and (ii) the key gaps in knowledge among major stakeholder groups. Furthermore, the structure and content of individual courses has been heavily influenced by over 250 experienced managers, scientists and extension officers. This wide base of expertise underpins the currency, practicality and high relevance of the individual courses developed by Rangelands Australia.
