The minimum GPA to be considered for admission into this program is 4.0. The GPA cut-off for those offered a place in 2018 was 5.15.

Why study the Master of Speech Pathology Studies?
Speech Pathology focuses on the management of communication and/or swallowing difficulties. Communication problems can occur in the areas of speech, language, voice, fluency (stuttering), hearing or literacy.
A speech pathologist assists people of all ages, from children to adults, who present with communication problems due to developmental delays, disease or injury such as stroke, hearing loss, traumatic brain injury, and intellectual disability. They also work with clients who have feeding or swallowing problems.
Study the Master of Speech Pathology Studies at UQ and you will learn from award-winning teachers, researchers and clinical educators who are among the best in Australia. This program will give you the theoretical knowledge, professional attributes, and clinical and research skills necessary for a career in speech pathology.
What you can study
This program is conducted full-time over 2.5 years (5 semesters), beginning in July (Semester 2) of each year. The first semester introduces students to the profession of Speech Pathology and its key concepts. Subsequently, students will focus on the integration of theoretical knowledge and clinical skills, including clinical practicums that focus on paediatric and adult assessment and rehabilitation across a range of different practice areas and settings.

Placement courses
Students undertake over 550 hours of supervised clinical practice in a range of clinical settings that includes hospitals, educational facilities, other health care organisations, private practices and UQ's internal clinics. During placements, students will have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework and research to practice and develop their clinical skills in real life settings.
Students will undertake a variety of sessional practical experiences from year one before commencing full time clinical placement blocks during year two.
Students may be required to undertake clinical placements outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area and students are required to fund their travel, accommodation and daily living expenses.

Research component
The program incorporates advanced training in clinical reasoning and independent research. Students may opt to undertake a research project in their final year.

To be considered for enrolment, an applicant must:
- hold a bachelor degree; study in fields such as health, humanities, education, social, physical or biological sciences is recommended.
- if the bachelor degree was completed more than 10 years prior to program commencement, have subsequently completed a postgraduate qualification, or a minimum of 8 units/4 courses of university level study.
- have successfully completed, within the 10 years prior to program commencement, the following university level study:
- 2 units (1 course) in statistics; and
- 2 units (1 course) in either linguistics, psychology, or human physiology.

Additional costs
- Annual CPR re-certification (approximately $60 per year)
- Students are expected to fund travel and living expenses associated with placements, some of which may be outside the Brisbane metropolitan area.
- Senior First Aid Certificate (including CPR) (approximately $155 renewed every 3 years)
- A clinical uniform shirt is required and may be purchased through the School.
- Costs for vaccinations and serology are the responsibility of the student and will vary based on individual and program requirements.
