Why study Strategies for Managing Challenging Classroom Behaviours?

This SFC discusses an approach to behaviour change based on the principles of behaviour analysis which are particularly suited to developing interventions for individual students with challenging behaviours. Behaviour analysis utilizes the principles of behaviour that have been developed through a process of systematic, objective observation. These principles have been incorporated into behaviour change procedures which are designed to modify behaviour in one of several directions: increase, decrease, extend, or maintain the rate or duration of a particular behaviour. Recent developments in neuroscience have provided additional insights into why students act the way they do under certain conditions and this will be discussed.

Students will have up to 3 months to complete the module.

What you can study

Topics covered include: 1. Increasing behaviours by arranging consequences and applying specific strategies that increase positive behaviour 2. Decreasing behaviours by arranging consequences and applying specific strategies to decrease inappropriate behaviour. 3. Understanding the rationale for conducting a functional analysis before implementing a behaviour change plan. 4. Understanding how to promote generalisation of appropriate behaviours across settings and time. 5. Helping individuals learn to apply different self-management techniques to manage their behaviours. Careers

Graduates will have the knowledge and skills to be able to utilise a range of strategies to promote positive behaviour change in students with challenging behaviours. This SFC will help students acquire the knowledge and skills required to manage students with challenging behaviours. Opportunities for employment exist within education, youth work, social work, and community settings.
