Why study the Bachelors of Mathematics/Economics?

The dual four-year program provides students with a focused background in economic theories and principles, along with the in-depth knowledge of a mathematics degree. In the Economics component, available study areas include: business economics; economic policy; economic history; econometrics; environmental and resource economics; financial markets; labour economics; health economics; international trade and development; macroeconomics; and microeconomics.

In the Mathematics component you will choose to develop a comprehensive specialised knowledge in one field of mathematics or a high level of sophistication in the applications of mathematics. Modern computation, advances in scientific technology and the increasing production of data have all increased the scope for applications of mathematics well beyond the traditional areas of engineering and the physical sciences, to include fields such as finance, economics, information technology and molecular biology. There is increasing recognition that graduates with high-level quantitative and analytic skills will play a key role at the forefront of new developments in these and other fields.

Program rules for the Bachelors of Mathematics/Economics

To complete the Bachelors of Mathematics/Economics

To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelors of Mathematics/Economics, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.

A student is required to obtain 64 units, comprising -

  • 32 units from the BEcon course list comprising -
      (i) 18 units from Group 1 (not including ECON1050 or ECON1310); and
      (ii) 14 units (8 units must be at level 3) for either -
      • one major in Group 2 (6 units must be at level 3); and 2 units from Group 3; or
      • elective courses from Group 3 with no more than 4 units of non-ECON coded courses; and
  • 32 units* from the BMath course list comprising -
      (i) 14 units from Part A;
      (ii) 14 units from Part B or Part C, or a combination of both; and
      (iii) 4 units from the BMath course list, or Part A or Part B of the BSc
      course list, or courses approved by the associate dean (academic).

*Students must complete a minimum of 8 units for late year courses. Students may complete a major in an area defined in Part B, by completing an approved combination of 16 units.
