Why study the Bachelor of Health, Sport and Physical Education (Honours)?

This program will prepare you to teach young people about the importance of being healthy and the fun of participating in sports and physical activities. Be a leader in your field and encourage students from all backgrounds to understand their fitness and health and develop a lifelong love of being active.

You will encourage young people to explore a range of sport and physical activities, develop self-esteem and acquire social skills including decision-making and problem-solving. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of the sciences behind human movement including biomechanics, motor development, skill acquisition and exercise physiology.

Study at the university that has the longest history of physical education teaching in Australia, at one of the best human movement and nutrition sciences schools known around the world for its leading research and expert staff. You will be confident with over 100 days of professional teaching experience including a full school term in your fourth year in variety of settings including primary, secondary and special needs.

You will graduate with a highly respected honours qualification and qualify with the Queensland College of Teachers as specialists teachers of physical education, health education and junior science.

What you can study

The Bachelor of Health, Sport and Physical Education (Honours) is designed to prepare you for a career in health and physical education (HPE) as well as professional practice in sport education and related areas (e.g. health promotion, sports coaching, recreation and sports development).

In year 1 and 2, you will gain a strong foundation in the sub-disciplines of human movement studies. You'll study the complex and diverse nature of human movement from physiological, biomechanical, socio-cultural, psychological, pedagogical (teaching) and health perspectives.

In year 3, you will learn about teaching health, sport and physical activity, in both school and community environments. There are professional placements in schools in years 3 and 4 with the "major practicum" being part of the final year. These placements provide opportunities to work with students and experience professional life in schools.

Placement courses

You will undertake over 100 days of supervised practical teaching experience in a range of settings including primary, secondary and special needs schools. During your placements, you will have the opportunity to apply your theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework to practice and develop your clinical skills in real life setting.

The practical teaching experience in third year of the program includes observing a primary school program for 5 days, participating as a staff member at a secondary school for at least 25 days and spending one day per week at a primacy school planning and implementing Health Sport and Physical Education (HPE) lessons. During the third year, you will also undertake sessional practical experiences (e.g. motor active clinic) as well as practical teaching experience.

During year 4, you are immersed in the life of a school for 12 weeks and in particular the HPE department. By week five of this placement, you will be teaching a full load in HPE and Junior Science.

Clinical placements may be outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area where you will be required to fund your travel, accommodation and daily living expenses.

Honours

Honours will be awarded to all graduates of this program.

This program has limited intake capacity.

Before starting placement courses, you must obtain, and hold for the duration of the program, a current First Aid Certificate (including CPR) and Blue Card. You may also be required to provide evidence that you do not carry blood-borne transmissible viruses or tuberculosis (TB) and comply with a schedule of immunisations. As part of the Australian Institute for Teaching and Leadership (AITSL) revised Standards and Procedures (2015), applicants to initial teacher education courses (pre-service teachers) must satisfy both academic and non-academic entry criteria for selection to the course. All applicants will need to complete an online questionnaire to meet the non-academic entry requirement for this program. Once you have submitted your application, you will be directed to the online questionnaire.

From 2017, commencing students are required to successfully meet the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) standards prior to graduation. Current students (enrolled prior to 2017) are also strongly encouraged to meet the LANTITE test prior to graduation as you may be asked for evidence of this when seeking employment.
