Why study the Bachelors of Commerce/ Education (Secondary)?

The Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Education(Secondary) program is designed to meet the needs of students who wish to complete a pre-service teacher education program, but still have the basis to move into the range of other career options that are normally available to students completing a Commerce degree.

Placement courses

Compulsory Placement Course

Students must complete 20 days school experience and 80 days supervised practicum. The school experience is embedded in 4 courses that each require 5 days of activity associated with schools and/or school age students. Students are required to complete two blocks (7-8 weeks) of supervised practicum in their professional year. Effort is made to place students a reasonable distance from their home but they can be expected to travel up to 90 minutes due to public transport connections and incur costs associated with travel and possible lost income. Students are generally placed between the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Ipswich and are encouraged to explore the option of a rural placement.

Students are required to have a current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) before commencing practicum.

Program rules for the Bachelors of Commerce/ Education (Secondary)

To complete the Bachelors of Commerce/ Education (Secondary)

To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelors of Commerce/ Education (Secondary), a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.

A student is required to obtain #68 comprising -

  • #36 from the BCom List including -
      (i) #24 of compulsory courses from Group 1; and
      (ii) #12 from one major in Group 2 (#6 must be at level 3); or
      (iii) #12 of elective courses from Group 3 (#6 must be at level 3, and only #2 may be at level 1); and
  • #32 from the BEd(Sec) List including -
      (i) #16 from Part A; and
      (ii) #16 from Part B.
The Professional (final) Year of the BEd(Sec) program must be taken fulltime and can only be commenced when the BCom Group 1 and BEd(Sec) Part A requirements have been met. Refer to the BCom/BEd(Sec) rules for further information.
