Why study the Bachelor of Agricultural Science?

Go beyond the traditional growing of crops and animal production to take on a diverse and challenging career in Agricultural science where you will use scientific, technological, management, economic, environmental and social principles to meet the world's need for food and fibres. UQ's Bachelor of Agricultural Science offers you a broad range of courses covering topics from economics, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, animal nutrition, land use and the environment, and agricultural development in Asia.

During this four year program you will gain an international experience through a 3 week placement with Gadjah Mada University in Indonesia where you will focus on the biophysical, economic and social aspects of small scale tropical production systems.

In the final two years you will undertake an independent research project where you will extend your specialization in either animal or plant science and build a successful career in the agricultural industries in research and development, production and management or service industries such as rural finance.

What you can do with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science

Careers

As an agricutlural scientist, you will apply your knowledge of scientific, technological, management, economic, environemental and social principles to major challenges, such as climate change and food security, to ensure the sustainable production of food and fibre for global consumption.

As a graduate, you will work in local, national or international agribusinesses offering advice to graziers and growers on animal and plant nutrition and pest control, or you may specialise as a plant breeder, soil scientist or horticulturalist.

You maybe challenged to manage water resources more efficiently, control pests to economic levels while concurrently avoiding the development of genetic resistance, or treat soils to ensure future generations are not disadvantaged.

Agricultural Science offers exciting, challenging careers in a wide variety of fields, including:

  • agronomists and horticulturalists in companies and governments advising growers on cultivating crops to ensure maximum profitability and sustainability
  • scientists in government, industry and international institutions researching areas as diverse as genetic engineering to soil science
  • agricultural consultants and advisors for producers and companies, domestically and internationally
  • managers of agricultural enterprises, family and company-owned farms or agribusiness companies and rural industries
  • advisers in banks and other financial organisations to ensure rural industry investments are economically sound
  • animal scientists and dairy technologists
  • agricultural and resource economists
  • extension and inspection officers
  • land information systems officers
  • regulators of government policy such as keeping Australia free from pests and diseases
  • educators (after completing a Graduate Diploma of Education)

Program rules for the Bachelor of Agricultural Science

To complete the Bachelor of Agricultural Science

To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelor of Agricultural Science, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.

Students will complete #64 units in total, comprising:

  • #42 from part A
  • #18 for part B in a chosen major
  • #4 from part B or other program lists.
Students must complete at least #24 of Late Year courses. No more than #24 of level 1 courses can be included in the program.
