Why study Plant Biotechnology and Innovation Management?

The Innovation Management dual majors prepare students for the growing focus of Biotechnology organizations and research groups on seeking markets for their scientific outputs. As the industry matures there is an increasing awareness of the need to be in tune with commercial realities.

While Biotech is increasingly interdisciplinary, relying on teams of scientists with varying backgrounds to make discoveries, it also relies on input from a variety of professions to achieve market outcomes. This requires some understanding of the essentials of intellectual property law, financing ventures, managing people, building networks and alliances, competing internationally, managing projects, marketing products and services, and planning for growth in a competitive environment.

This dual major allows you to develop the business skills required to complement their science skills and be more competitive in the Biotechnology field, whether you choose to work in the public or private sector.

Employment opportunities

Bioinformatics is an expanding area and there is a worldwide need for people trained in this field, both in research institutions and industry. Work in biotechnology cuts across several industrial and service sectors including health, agriculture, aquaculture environment, forestry, law and commerce. The Bachelor of Biotechnology (Honours) can lead to career paths in the following areas:

  • Pharmaceutical, chemical, food, diagnostics companies
  • Legal and consulting companies
  • Government agencies, Research Institutes and Universities.
