Why study Journalism?

The journalism minor introduces communication students to the theories and principles of journalistic storytelling. An exciting global career, journalists require highly developed skills in language, a good understanding of the media, an interest in current affairs, and a broad general knowledge. The minor offers practical courses on newswriting and investigative techniques, alongside those that study the relationships between mass media, politics and society. The focus is on practical and theoretical aspects of journalism, including reporting and writing, ethics, law, research, visual journalism and design. Our journalism minor includes two advanced, specialised courses that are unique to UQ. Social Justice Storytelling focuses on the professional and ethical practices of journalism involving First Nations Peoples, refugees, and those with disabilities, among others. Journalism Design introduces you to design thinking and methods as a way of designing journalistic technology. Our journalism program prepares students for careers as journalists and provides a general education about journalism and news media, press, radio, television, online, and multimedia.
