Why study Guidance and Counselling?

This field provides the knowledge, understanding and skills that are essential for today's professional guidance counsellors. This specially designed program of study allows students to develop competencies as professional guidance counsellors for employment in schools, TAFE colleges, agencies, or as private practitioners. The program focuses on:

  • developing counselling competencies
  • understanding career development and education across the life-span
  • linking assessment practices to instructional interventions
  • understanding ethical behaviour and practices
  • developing comprehensive guidance programs
  • participating in a guidance and counselling practicum placement.

Commonwealth Supported Places are available for Australian citizens, permanent visa holders, and New Zealand citizens.

Employment opportunities

A Master of Educational Studies (Guidance and Counselling) or its equivalent is the minimal standard required by Education Queensland and the independent system for teachers who are seeking to be employed as school counsellors (guidance officers).
