Why study Anthropology?

Anthropology is the study of culture and difference. Our courses explore life in all its diversity, and teach ethnographic and social science methodologies (such as field research) relevant to a broad range of issues and careers. Graduates contribute anthropological knowledge, skills, and experience to roles in government, industry, and community organisations across Australian society and internationally. A major in anthropology will open up opportunities to work with Australian Indigenous people, for example in the resolution of native land claims and the protection of heritage, as well as in managing the social impacts of developments like mining and tourism. Anthropologists also work with international development agencies across the Asia-Pacific and around the world, for example, in the field of medical anthropology, where anthropologists contribute to understanding illness and health across cultures. Opportunities for anthropologists also exist in business and the corporate world, where graduates bring anthropological skills and training to work on understanding the behaviour of consumers and the ways in which culture affects how and why people may be prepared to adopt new technologies, how and why shopping habits are changing, and a host of other issues.
