Course description

This course provides students with the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of the theoretical & research basis of current issues in psychology. The psychology area covered will vary from year to year.

2018 Topic This course will provide students with the opportunity to gain indepth knowledge of the theoretical and research basis of current issues in the field of cognitive neuroscience. Topics to be covered include a history and overview of approaches to understanding brain/behaviour relationships; neural mechanisms underlying selective attention, including pathologies of attentional processes (spatial neglect, simultanagnosia, ADHD); characteristics of conscious versus unconscious perception; neural mechanisms underlying multisensory interactions, including syndromes of anomalous multisensory perception (eg synaesthesia); brain processes involved in face recognition and facial expression analysis; neural circuits involved in spatial navigation; executive control and its relation to addictive behaviour; the organisation and control of action; and mechanisms responsible for brain plasticity. The tutorials will provide students with an opportunity to critically evaluate recent research findings in each of the topic areas covered in the lectures.
