Course description

This course will introduce students to the theory and practice of midwifery. An overview of the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods, including normal newborn care will be explained to enable students to begin to develop the knowledge required to commence safe contemporary woman centred midwifery practice. A broad overview of each of the stages to pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal care will be discussed with consideration of the core technical components required for a beginning level of midwifery practice. Students will have the opportunity to practice skills of monitoring, assessing and caring for the woman and baby during the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods, in a simulated environment.
