Course description

This course will build on the foundation of knowledge and skills established in Clinical Practice 1 (MEDI7121) to further develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in history-taking, patient and/or peer examination, communication, clinical reasoning and procedural skills. It consists of five areas: Clinical Coaching, Clinical Communication, Procedural Skills, Nutrition Masterclass and Professionalism. In Clinical Coaching students are taught the history taking and examination skills integral to medical consultations. Students cover five major body systems over the year in Clinical Practice 1 & 2, focusing on the musculoskeletal system, neurological system and gastrointestinal system in Clinical Practice 2. Clinical Communication Skills concentrates on the process of communicating with patients using history taking as the context. A biopsychosocial model underpins the theory that the students learn and then demonstrate when interviewing simulated patients. Procedural Skills Workshops provide the opportunity for students to learn and then practise a range of basic procedures, such as Care of the Deteriorating Patient. The Nutrition Masterclass will introduce principles of nutrition in practice and further develop history-taking skills. Professionalism encompasses a range of skills and behaviours which are taught and developed throughout the Program, and which should be demonstrated at all times.
