Course description

This course examines the history of Europe in the High Middle Ages, with a particular concentration on the regions of modern-day France, Spain, Italy, England, Germany, and the Low Countries. Our focus will be on various personalities and ideas that contributed to the shaping of Christendom, the political, cultural and geographical identity on which modern-day `Europe' was founded. The subjects we will examine include feudalism, state formation, Church Reform, monasticism, the Crusading movement, the Twelfth-Century Renaissance, urbanization, and law. This course may not run if there are fewer than 20 enrolments.
