Course description

This course will focus on the five centuries between 300 and 800, a period dominated by two empires: the Roman and the Carolingian. These five centuries witnessed the mass movement of ethnic groups across Europe, constant invasions at the hands of the Vikings, Huns, and Arabs. Significantly, the period more commonly known as Late Antiquity or the Early Middle Ages, saw the collapse of the Roman Empire, the triumph of Christianity over paganism, the birth of Islam, the rise of France and England, the rise of the papacy and the Roman Church, and in many ways the transition from an ancient to Medieval world. This course may not run if there are fewer than 20 enrolments.
