Course description
This course aims to explore the concept of literary modernism in French literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. One of the principal problems to be examined in the course will be that of representation, that is, the relationship between literary language & reality, how French modernist literary texts conceive of such a relationship, & how this differs from both realist & postmodernist conceptions of literary representation. Thus, while concentrating on issues relating to modernism & modernity, students will also be given a broad overview of some of the major French literary movements of the last two centuries. Note: Course offering may be cancelled unless a minimum of 20 students enrol.
