Course description

This course involves a fourteen day residential field trip, based in far north Queensland. The course is designed as a key cohort experience for Bachelor of Environmental Management (Sustainable Development) students to explore a range of issues related to sustainable development and environmental management, both as individuals and with their peers. The course provides an opportunity for students to explore and apply foundational concepts within this field of study (covered in courses such as ENVM1501, ENVM2100 and others), in an intensive and enriching environment. The field trip is based around daily themes, and students are encouraged to make connections both across focus themes and between focus themes and global-scale challenges. The themes explored in this course include: Sustainable development in sensitive environments and the role of biodiversity offsets, Indigenous Australians and sustainable development, with a focus on the Wild Rivers debate, Development on the Cairns coastal plain - planning for population growth in a vulnerable region, and Catchment management, sustainable agriculture and reef impacts.Practical context for examination of principles of sustainable development put into practice in a range of human activities, environments & industries. Field excursion during July break. Additional fee payable.
