Course description

This course will cover state-of-the-art renewable energy technologies at the currently commercial frontier and emerging technologies currently at lower, pre-commercial technology readiness levels (TRL), all in the context of the ultimate engineering frontiers according to engineering science. The course aims to introduce students to future technologies that will likely become the key to solving the broad global challenges of energy demand while also meeting societal and environmental needs. Students will learn how to: a) evaluate the renewable energy resource available, b) calculate the energy or power conversion capability of the technology, c) assess the technical performance, economics and competitive position of a given technology relative to other renewable and conventional alternatives under the range of operating conditions and environmental factors (weather, ambient temperature etc). Examples of the technologies in focus may include: - Modern solar PV technology - Solar thermal technology - Geothermal energy - Innovations in fossil power - Energy storage technologies - Materials development - Future competitors to renewable energy for decarbonisation.
