Course description

This course will provide a practical introduction to genomics and bioinformatics. Topics include next-generation sequencing, biological databases, sequence alignment, similarity searches, genome browsers, molecular evolution, human disease genetics and proteomics. No previous computing experience is expected. Students will undertake computer-based practical modules throughout the course that provide hands-on experience with established bioinformatics tools and approaches. This course will provide students with an understanding of the key concepts that underpin bioinformatics and genomics approaches and a thorough grounding in the practical application of computational tools for biological sequence analysis.
