Apply for alternative exam arrangements as soon as possible. If you have a disability advisor, speak to them at the beginning of semester. For everyone else, apply as soon as you can after the release of exam timetables.

3. Disability, injury or condition

You are eligible for alternative examination arrangements if you have a disability, impairment, injury or condition that needs to be taken into consideration during an exam.

These disabilities or conditions may be permanent or temporary, and might include mobility, sensory, learning, physical, mental health, medical or other conditions.

Adjustments might include:

  • additional examination working time
  • rest breaks
  • use of a computer or a writer
  • ergonomic furniture
  • accommodation of personal equipment
  • food and drink
  • a separate room
  • specially prepared examination papers, etc.

Exam considerations for pregnant students

Unless there are complications, pregnancy is generally not considered an eligible condition. Here's what you need to know:

  • If there are no complications with your pregnancy: Email for comfort adjustments (e.g. a different chair, cushion). Please note the Examinations Office can't approve other adjustments such as rest time or toilet breaks.
  • If there are complications with your pregnancy: Contact Student Services. Supporting documentation will be required and appropriate adjustments will be determined.

Attention all students: exam adjustments are completely separate to a Student Access Plan (Disability). Your SAPD does not apply to examinations. Your SAPD only covers in-class participation, activities, and assessment – and not exams.

How to apply

The following procedures apply to all exams, including mid-semester, end-of-semester, deferred and supplementary examinations.

  • If you already have exam adjustments in place, please begin at Step 3.
  • If you do not have exam adjustments in place – or if you want to change your adjustments – please begin at Step 1.

Step 1 – Gather documents to support your application

You must have medical or specialist documentation that outlines the nature of your disability or condition, and how it affects your studies.

The exact documents you have to supply will depend on the nature of your disability or condition.

Step 2 – Make an appointment with a Disability Advisor

Disability Advisors work within Student Services. They are responsible for evaluating your academic access requirements and for organising appropriate exam arrangements.

Ensure you bring your documentation when you meet with a Disability Advisor.

Your advisor will discuss your exam requirements and submit a request for approval by the Director of Student Services.


You only need to meet with a Disability Advisor if you do not have exam adjustments in place. If you already have approved exam adjustments, only make an appointment if you want to change them.

Step 3 – Email the Examinations Section

  1. Download and complete the Request for Alternative Examination Arrangements form (PDF, 272.5 KB)
  2. Email the completed form to, or deliver it in person to a Student Centre.

You must advise the Examinations Section in writing of your specific examination needs before each examination period.

Submit your form no later than:

  • Mid-semester exams: 14 days before an exam is scheduled to take place
  • End-of-semester exams: 14 days before the first day of the examination period.

In the case of temporary disabilities or injuries, we realise that 14 days' notice isn't always possible, so this requirement is waived. Please still apply as soon as possible.

Step 4 – Receive a confirmation email

If your application is approved, a new exam schedule will be sent to your student email account. This new schedule will serve as an official agreement between you and the University.

Please note that it is your responsibility to pay attention to the times and locations for your exams and to arrive at the correct room at the correct time and on the correct day.

Deferred or supplementary exams

If you are applying for alternative exam arrangements for a deferred or supplementary exam, submit the following on the same day:

  • your Request for Alternative Examination Arrangements form, and
  • your deferred or supplementary exam application.
