Brisbane offers an amazing range of living choices. Suburbs vary in character and housing types, so it is important to do your research, and think about which area would best suit your lifestyle, needs and budget.

St Lucia

St Lucia offers a diverse mix of apartment living and large residential homes, all nestled along the Brisbane River.

The suburb is home to a range of riverside parks and walks, and shopping villages with supermarkets, convenience stores, and restaurant and takeaway options.

Public transport options include bus and ferry, and it's an easy commute to campus.

You can catch a bus to the city, ride your bike to Toowong Village, catch a ferry to West End or walk across the Eleanor Schonell Bridge to Dutton Park.

Toowong extends from the banks of the Brisbane River to the fringes of Mt Coot-tha.

Toowong Village shopping centre is at the river-end of the suburb and has a large supermarket, department store, public library and medical centre.

The area is popular with young professionals and students, and accommodation is a mix of apartments and Queenslander-style houses

The area has a range of pedestrian paths and cycleways and you can walk or cycle into the CBD along the river.

Toowong also has a great range of public transport options, including a train station and a number of major bus routes to the city, St Lucia campus and outer western suburbs.

West End

Multicultural West End, Highgate Hill and Dutton Park are all located south of the Brisbane River and are within close distance to both Brisbane City and St Lucia campus.

The suburbs are home to many young families, students, artists and young professionals and are well-served by public transport including bus, train and ferry.

The suburbs also support a thriving mix of food and entertainment, with small cafés, restaurants, shops, pubs, markets and street festivals throughout the year.

Indooroopilly and Taringa

Leafy Indooroopilly is bordered by St Lucia to the north and is home to the Indooroopilly Shopping Centre – a major retail hub that provides casual employment opportunities to UQ students.

Housing varies from large family homes to medium-rise apartment blocks and the suburb attracts families, professionals and students alike.

The suburb also has two cinemas, a golf club and an array of takeaways, pubs and casual restaurants.

Taringa is the first suburb east of St Lucia and is split in half by Moggill Road, a major thoroughfare with regular bus services into Brisbane City and the blue-chip outer western suburbs.

Taringa and Indooroopilly are both well served by public transport, including train and bus, and their proximity to St Lucia means cyclists can pedal to campus in about 15 to 20 minutes

Herston and Kelvin Grove

Herston and Kelvin Grove are two neighbouring suburbs close to Brisbane City and UQ’s Herston campus.

Herston is home to the largest hospital in Queensland – the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital – and the suburb has long attracted residents from Brisbane's medical community.

Kelvin Grove has a thriving student population (a QUT campus is located in the suburb) and offers an affordable range of housing options.

Kelvin Grove Urban Village, a mixed-use development, is a popular destination for food and shopping and has a combination of apartments, restaurants, retail and cultural facilities.

South Brisbane

South Brisbane is an inner-city suburb located on the southern bank of the Brisbane River, directly across from Brisbane City.

The suburb is home to the South Bank Parklands, museums and theatres, and is a popular tourist destination.

South Brisbane has experienced major redevelopment and renewal in recent years and now has a large number of brand new high-rise apartment buildings, restaurants, bars and cafés. 

As the city's cultural hub, the area always has a lot on: South Bank Parklands have events and markets every weekend, restaurants line Grey Street and Little Stanley Street, musicals and plays are staged at the Queensland Performing Arts Complex, and there’s plenty of shopping and retail outlets.

UQ's Gatton campus is situated 5km east of Gatton, a major agricultural town in the Lockyer Valley.

Gatton is the business hub of the Lockyer Valley and has various dining options, sports and recreational facilities, retail stores, cultural sites, and essential services. The atmosphere in town is laid back, with a strong community focus.

The town is surrounded by natural beauty, including Lake Apex, which is the perfect place to study outdoors or have a picnic with friends. The waterfront is home to 150 different species of birds and is a popular site for walking. If you're looking to get in the water, Lake Dyer near Laidley is a popular spot for paddle craft, bushwalking, camping and birdwatching.

The Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre is home to the Queensland Transport Museum, where you can experience and learn about the history of regional towns in Australia. The Cultural Centre also hosts the Lockyer Valley Art Gallery, which has different exhibitions every month.

If you're feeling a bit more active, you can visit the Lockyer Valley Sports and Aquatic Centre to meet members of the community and sign up for social sports; or go to the Gatton Equestrian Centre for a number of monthly events. Gatton is also home to the 18-hole Gatton Jubilee Golf Club.

Other popular towns in the area Laidley, Plainland, Forest Hill and College View.
