Apply for financial hardship assistance

Managing your money while you study can be challenging. If you need some extra help to get through your studies, you can apply for financial hardship assistance.

International Student Scholarship

The International Student Scholarship is now available for international students enrolled in an undergraduate program, experiencing temporary and unexpected financial hardship.

Eligibility

You're eligible if you:

  • are an international student in accordance with the University's Student Fees Policy
  • can demonstrate temporary and unexpected financial hardship
  • are enrolled full-time in any undergraduate program in the year of the award
  • have not received assistance from the Financial Hardship Assistance Scheme for the year of the award
  • have not been awarded another scholarship, bursary or grant that the Chair considers similar.
How to apply

To apply, you need to submit an online application by following the application steps below and provide supporting documentation. Applications are open Monday 22 April 2024 and close Monday 6 May 2024.

Apply for the International Student Scholarship

If you're experiencing urgent and unexpected financial problems that are affecting your studies, you may be eligible for an emergency hardship grant.

If you are experiencing financial hardship and don't fit the criteria set out below, we encourage you to book an appointment with a student adviser to discuss your personal circumstances and how the University can support you through this difficult time.

Applications will be assessed on your financial need. In assessing need we evaluate the strength of personal statement, supporting documentation and identified personal circumstances. In some instances, you may be contacted if further information is required.

Financial hardship assistance grants provide temporary help for unforeseen circumstances. We don't provide ongoing financial support. A limited number of hardship grants are available each year and are awarded in exceptional circumstances. You may apply for a grant after the census date.

Who can apply

To be eligible to apply for financial hardship assistance, you must:

  • be currently enrolled at UQ
  • have completed at least one semester of full time study, or be enrolled after census date of your first semester
  • be able to show that you have a temporary, unexpected financial need in one of the categories listed below
  • demonstrate that you have the ability and intention to complete your program

How to apply

Step 1: Submit an application

To apply, you need to submit an online application with the following supporting documents:

  • identification: your UQ student ID, plus one of your driver's license, Medicare card or passport
  • proof of income: at least 2 payslips or a current Centrelink Income Statement
  • bank statement: current bank account statements for the past 3 months (this must be an official statement; you can't submit a screenshot of your account)

Apply online

Make sure you upload all required documents.

Step 2: Meet with a Student Adviser

After you submit your application, a Student Adviser will contact you to request more documents (if applicable) or to arrange a face-to-face or ZOOM meeting to:

  • confirm your eligibility for financial assistance
  • talk about other support services that may be helpful
  • give you advice on managing your finances.

The Student Adviser may ask you to provide more documentation before they organise the meeting.

What happens next

After the meeting, you'll usually find out whether your application is successful within 5 business days.

Meeting the eligibility criteria doesn't guarantee that you'll receive financial assistance. Grants are awarded based on financial need. If your application is unsuccessful, it doesn't mean that you're not in need, but other applicants have been assessed as having a greater need.
